Book Description

Margaret’s sixteen years in care were profoundly turbulent. In her early days, she was branded a “problem child” and in adolescence, “a psychiatric case.” In her pilgrimage toward independence, Margaret found herself in a world of alcoholism, prostitution, and homelessness. Her many suicide attempts failed. Yet, in the emotional desert of her young life, there came a few individuals rich in patience, love, and compassion—caregivers that gave generously and taught her that even the smallest light shines all the brighter for the darkness. This is a story of overcoming adversity, of transcendence and resilience, of what is possible no matter what befalls you; a story for all those who dare to dream, dare to believe, dare to hope, and are courageous enough to take the risk and try. This story is for anyone in our society interested in an aspect of social contemporary history that concerns past practices of the care and protection of our most vulnerable—our children.

About the Author

Margaret Spivey’s story began in poverty and violence. At eighteen months of age, after the untimely death of her father at age twenty-seven from alcoholism, she and her two sisters were abandoned by their mother, who chose to go off with another man even though it meant relinquishing three of her four children.
