Book Description

On Hogmanay a 20-something breaks up with his girlfriend at a party in Glasgow and sets out to walk the 20 miles home to East Kilbride. On the way he amuses himself by writing imaginary letters in his head to his estranged family in between buying drugs, crashing parties, getting stabbed, losing his contact lenses and getting beaten up. This upbeat story spins into the surreal as the narrator begins to near East Kilbride. Is the main character dead? Tripping? A ghost? A grimly humoured story that ends poignantly.

The Gravy Star is presented with brio and earthy humour and tempered with some wonderfully lyrical passages. — The Sunday Herald, 10.06.01

The writing style … and the developing story are increasingly, quirkily attractive. Guilt, resistance and endurance are its key themes. — The Scotsman, 16.06.01

The zigzags of narrative become increasingly crazed… the pace, energy and drive of the nameless wanderer s nightmare is undeniable. — Alan Riach, The Scotsman, 16.06.01

[The Gravy Star] is a powerfully evocative and compellingly constructed tale. — The List 22.06.01

enhances the tradition, taking it into unexplored territories by realistically articulating experiences and conditions it would be comfortable to ignore. — Carl MacDougall, The Herald 26.05.01
