Book Description

Public space and street design in commercial districts can dictate the success or failure of walkable community centers. Instead of focusing our efforts on designing new “compact town centers,” many of which are located in the suburbs, we should instead be revitalizing existing authentic town centers. This informative, practical book describes methods for restoring the health and vibrancy of the streets and public spaces of our existing commercial districts in ways that will make them positive alternatives to suburban sprawl while respecting their historic character.

Clearly written and with numerous photos to enhance the text, Creating Vibrant Public Spaces uses examples from communities across the United States to illustrate the potential for restoring the balance provided by older urban centers between automobile access and “walkability.” In advice that can be applied to a variety of settings and scales, Crankshaw describes the tenets of contemporary design theory, how to understand the physical evolution of towns, how to analyze existing conditions, and how to evaluate the feasibility of design recommendations.

Good design in commercial centers, Crankshaw contends, facilitates movement and access, creates dynamic social spaces, and contributes to the sense of a “center”—a place where social, commercial, and institutional interaction is more vibrant than in surrounding districts. For all the talk of creating new “green” urban spaces, the ingredients of environmentally aware design, he points out, can often be found in the deteriorating cores and neighborhoods of towns and cities across the United States. With creativity, planning, and commitment, these centers can thrive again, adding to the quality of local life and contributing to the local economy, too.

Editorial Reviews

Review

If you want a book that explains why people like traditional urban design, read Ned Crankshaw’s Creating Vibrant Public Spaces. If you just want a book with specific ideas about designing for surface parking that enhances neighborhood and small-city commercial districts, read Ned Crankshaw’s Creating Vibrant Public Spaces. If you want some thought-provoking reflections on the tensions between good design and historic preservation, read Ned Crankshaw’s Creating Vibrant Public Spaces. –Center for Building Communities, December 15, 2008

“In this insightful book, Ned Crankshaw opens our eyes to the features that make downtown the kind of special place that people really care about. Equally important, he shows us how thoughtful design and common sense–qualities notably absent from a lot of much-ballyhooed downtown plans–can help repair the big holes we carelessly ripped in the fabric of our communities.” –Richard Moe, president, National Trust for Historic Preservation, October, 2008

“This is truly a book for these times. Crankshaw’s approach, recognizing and relishing each building, storefront, sidewalk, park or square space as an individual expression of the local people, opens the door to a new sustainability.” –Fred Kent, president, Project for Public Spaces, October, 2008

“Creating Vibrant Public Spaces is both practical and thought-provoking. I especially appreciate Crankshaw’s sensitivity to the contrasts between the perspectives of experts–be they designers or planners– and the citizens who use these public spaces. Conveying the values, as well as limitations, of expertise in shaping our towns and places is an essential message for both students and citizen groups.” –Rachel Kaplan, professor, School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan, and author of With People in Mind, October, 2008
