Book Description
Luther’s thinking about will and agency evolved over his lifetime. His anthropology became increasingly open, with a growing affirmation of the created order and a recognition of faith’s role in the transformation of the world, leading to Luther’s exhortation to take courage in God s transforming presence for the good of all.
Editorial Reviews
Review
“A refreshing and convincing challenge to the stock notion that Luther’s theology promotes human passivity.” –Scott Henrix, Princeton Theological Seminary
“This is a book that both retrieves previous challenges to Luther’s theology and ethics, and advances original responses to these challenges. Based on significant new research, Gaebler offers powerful new interpretations of developments in Luther’s positions on gender issues, self-love, and the possibilities of human agency. This is a brilliant contribution to Luther studies and to Christian theology in general.” –Margaret A. Farley, Yale Divinity School
