This study demonstrates that exmining religious rhetoric has the potential to provide genuine insights into how a given religion manages, at a very basic level, to gain adherents. Over-emphasis on new religious movements, at the expense of revived traditional religions, has made it more difficult to correctly classify or identify the latter. This work contains a significant and detailed micro-qualitative study of two religious movements, Tzu Chi and Falun Gong in Taiwan.
