Book Description

"Bodies — human, equine and beyond — fascinate Hanawalt, who dares us to imagine what it would be like to find increasingly ridiculous things sexy... Hanawalt’s jokey vignettes and colorful animal drawings belie a very serious narrative precision."—Sam Thielman, The New York Times

From the creative mind behind Bojack Horseman and Tuca & Bertie comes a fragmented memoir — poignant, punchy, and sometimes just plain gross!

I Can't Stop Thinking About Horses and Sex marks the long-awaited return of Tuca & Bertie creator and BoJack Horseman producer/production designer Lisa Hanawalt to comics. This is the honest, silly, horny and vulnerable memoir of a horse girl, now in her forties and reflecting back on a lifetime of obsessions.

Whether Hanawalt is confronting large life issues like whether or not to have kids, being an anxious lil freak, caring for a sick horse, revisiting childhood trauma, or dealing with a major breakup and the ensuing lustfulness—she delivers a reading experience that’s relatable, affirming, and almost always hilarious. In lush colors and kinetic lines, she charts the strange terrain of life, one bumpy, dusty horseback ride at a time.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Featured in fall previews from NPR, Vulture, Publishers Weekly, Lit Hub, LAist, and more!

"I Can't Stop represents the culmination of Hanawalt’s shtick for truth-telling via colorful anthropomorphized characters."—LA Times

"As weird, bawdy, and unexpectedly heartbreaking as one might expect from such a sui generis talent."—Vulture

"Hanawalt raises the dick joke to a fine art.”—Killian Fox, The Observer

“In her inimitable style—which has reformed the brains of so many into a technicolor world of anthropomorphized analogs for every type you’ve ever met, including the ones you wish you hadn’t—Lisa Hanawalt draws and writes the things we all wish we could say: about love, loss, and what it feels like to be in a human body."—Lena Dunham

"Ironies of life: Here she’s all obsessed with horses and riding horses, and she has this big ass, which she openly admits to and draws...and here I am obsessed with women with big asses and wanting to jump on them and ride them like horses. I guess I should write back to Lisa and ask her if she’d give me a ride on her big ass. She’d probably say no. Ironies of life."—R. Crumb

"I can't stop thinking about how this is the best and funniest and most vulnerable book about being a horny girl who loves both horses and Kevin Costner that I have ever read."—Samantha Irby

“I couldn’t put this book down! I read it in one night which felt like a sleepover with a tender, bold, hilarious friend who knew everything about me; nothing was shameful when we were together.”—Miranda July

“It's a privilege to be let into an artist's mind as they navigate big transitions. It's a lot neater to package up an experience as "completed," the lesson learned, hard-won thesis unveiled. Hanawalt does none of that here. In conclusion: Sarah Polley's indie darling Take This Waltz (2011) but with Thelwellian Fjords (that's a type of horse).”—Jillian Tamaki

"Horny and charming and suffused with the poignancy of wanting."—Maris Kreizman, Literary Hub

"A riot of colour... luridly alive with Hanawalt’s particular brand of charming weirdness."—Lucy Scholes, Financial Times

"Exuberant and unexpected, this is beautiful, sexy, gross, and altogether a joy to experience."—Annie Bostrom, Booklist Starred Review

"Hilarious and poignant... the strength of her comedic chops makes the more harrowing material hit even harder."—Oliver Sava, The AV Club
