Book Description

Luminis Books presents this riveting tale of adventure, young love, and doing the right thing, no matter what the cost.

For Amy Henderson, 1973 has been a lonely year of so many awkward moments she's actually lost count. Things turn around quickly when she assists in the rescue of an injured seal pup. To help save Pup, she forms an unlikely alliance with a questionable boy in a worn-out army jacket, as well as a peculiar older woman the kids in town refer to as "Old Coot."

Amy soon finds that people aren't always what they seem, as she nurtures Pup back to health with the help of her two new companions, Craig and Miss Cogshell. Unexpected detours occur as an ill-intentioned harbormaster hunts down Pup and a group of nosy popular girls set their affections on Craig.

As if these weren't obstacles enough, an even graver challenge presents itself soon thereafter, threatening the future of the entire town--and Amy's life as well.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-8–Amy Henderson's eighth-grade year has been very lonely. The teen lives in a tiny town in Maine, and her only friend moved away last year, in 1972. She takes walks to get out of her house, but there aren't many places to go except the convenience store, the pier, and the post office. One day, the postmistress asks Amy to deliver mail to Miss Cogshell, a scary old lady living near the pier. Amy learns that the woman has many stories to tell and that she isn't scary at all. Then a classmate tells Amy a secret. He has taken an injured seal pup to his house, but what he has done is illegal and he's afraid of getting caught. With Miss Cogshell's help, they try to nurse the animal back to health and Amy discovers she has found new friends in the most unlikely of places. This character-driven novel is told from Amy's point of view. The protagonist grows throughout the story, from a shy loner to having two friends and speaking her mind in front of her adversaries at school as well as to the whole town. There are a few strains on believability, especially when Amy and Craig are spotted after midnight by a classmate's father and by Miss Cogshell. That aside, Amy is a reliable narrator and easily relatable.–Natalie Struecker, Rock Island Public Library, ILα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

"Strykowski ably depicts Amy's insecurity and self-doubt, Craig's bravura and pain, and Miss Cogshell's wisdom with a deft, convincing touch. In essence, Amy comes of age as she fights to find her voice in the outside world and shed some of her debilitating insecurity. Readers will cheer her on, and her splendid team, too." --Booklist
