Book Description

Building Bridges: Integrating Language, Linguistics, Literature, and Translation in English Studies fruitfully engages in the current debate about the new purpose and process of English Studies by collectively envisioning a new direction whereby norms are questioned and revised, roles between teachers and learners are equalized, and the process of learning is contextualized. The new ‘democratic’ method of learning, as presented broadly by the chapters in this book, conceptualizes new roles for learners and offers a learning experience in which students are empowered and their experiences are contextualized as the means to achieve that goal. It also empowers translators by representing the concept of translation in all its complexity instead of in an idealized manner. The chapters in this book, thus, call for defining the objectives of English Studies in terms of language which is culturally informed as well as internationally applicable.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Building Bridges joins central issues of different disciplines typically housed in English departments into an interdisciplinary exploration of the field of English Studies, with its history, questions, problems, and most importantly fruitful linkages that can empower and inspire students, teachers, and practitioners. Together, the chapters in this volume offer a systematic theoretical background and a valuable practical guide to the principle questions of teaching and studying English language and literature, doing translation, and engaging in various analyses of text and talk. –Alla Tovares, Howard University
