PreSchool-Grade 2 Joining the trend of illus trated single songs is Buffalo Girls a picture book version of the western American folksong Buffalo Gals. In this embellished version, anthropomor phic buffalo girls sing, swim, sunbathe, “fix things,” bake, eat, are courted by buffalo boys, and of course, “dance by the light of the moon.” Those children who are familiar with the song will find the new lyrics to be forced and awk ward, especially when sung with the music. The pastel watercolors have a flat static quality. The characters’ faces are all the same, adding to the lacklus ter effect. This lack of vitality is espe cially disturbing considering the rollick ing nature of the original song. A potentially clever idea, but a flawed ex ecution.
