Book Description
In the summer of 1904, the twenty-three year old Bla Bartk had a significant if unlikely musical encounter up in the Transylvanian town of Gerlicepuszta. After overhearing a lullaby sung by a teenage servant girl named Lidi Dsa, he quizzed her about it, jotted the tune down, and so began a passion for folk music that changed the course of his life. One of Bartk s most popular works, the Romanian Folk Dances evokes both the raw spirit of the untainted folk melodies and the richness of early-20th century form and textures. Each of the six short piano pieces is based on a traditional melody which Bartk penned during his journeys around Transylvania. The specially-written text introduction elaborates on this intriguing story and is further illustrated with imagery of the composer and the unique events. The score has been newly engraved, with editorial revisions guided by recordings of the composer s own performance.
