From the book reviews:
“The subject of this book is an important one for new generations of astronomers. … The book would be an excellent foundation for a postgraduate course, and it is clear that students who completed it successfully and are inspired by the subject would be well-equipped for research. … Professor Maciel’s book is a fine addition to the astronomical literature and should be found along with those volumes on the shelves of all astronomical libraries.” (David A. Williams, The Observatory, Vol. 134 (1240), June, 2014)
The space between the stars includes a large variety of objects, where physical processes occur that are fundamental for the structure and evolution of galaxies. This book gives the reader some basic knowledge of these processes and at the same time, presents estimates of the main quantities relevant to the study of the interstellar medium. The book could be used as an introductory course on the interstellar medium by science students or by readers interested in astrophysics with an adequate physics and mathematics background.
About the Author
Dr. Walter J. Maciel received his Bachelors in physics from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 1970. He went on to obtain his MSc in astronomy from the Aeronautics Technology Institute in 1973 and his PhD in astronomy from the University of São Paulo in 1977. Dr. Maciel is presently a full astronomy professor at the University of São Paulo, and has been at the university for over 35 years. He is the author of three books published by Editora da Universidade de São Paulo, and received the Jabuti Prize in 2000 for his first book, Introduction to the Structure and Evolution of the Stars. His other two, Astrophysics of the Interstellar Medium, and Hydrodynamics and Stellar Winds: An Introduction, were among the finalists in 2003 and 2006, respectively.
