Book Description

My book focuses on the skills needed to play the Doumbek, Tar Frame Drum and Riqq. We begin by looking at proper sitting/hand positions and then move forward to playing a variety of rhythms. The main focus is to develop the skills needed to play and read music using your inner voice to say the syllables in which will make it more enjoyable to play = “Doum” – “tek” – “ka”.

This book will first begin with the basic skills/techniques of reading music in conjunction with playing the various syllable sounds on the Doumbek.

In the later chapters cultural specific Doumbek grooves are indepthly looked at that range from traditional Balladi to other cultural forms of music; such as the Chilean South American and African Dance grooves.

Instructions on how to play a variety of frame drums such as the Tar and Riqq are also covered.

Video links is included with this book so that you can practice along with and can refer to all the lessons throughout the book.

The other remarkable aspect of playing the Doumbek is that it is very portable to carry around and play in a variety of different surroundings. It’s kind of like playing a flute for a drummer.
