Book Description

The three Shabbat meals offer an opportunity to think about life and connect with others. However, despite our best intentions, the lack of time and sufficient resources may preclude in-depth grappling with more significant and meaningful issues. Around the Shabbat Table addresses this problem. Its goal is to serve as a springboard for more personally stimulating and meaningful Shabbat conversations. Each unit can be read directly at the Shabbat table and no prior knowledge or preparation is necessary. The ideas presented are designed for Jewish adults of all backgrounds and religious denominations. They reflect a philosophy that the Torah belongs to and should be accessible to all Jews, whatever they think or believe, wherever they may be.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Aryeh Ben David has written a most intelligent, inspiring, and thought-provoking book ostensibly on the Torah portions of the week but in reality on Jewish thought and traditions. The subject matter is ingeniously divided in accordance with the Sabbath meals and is filled with ideas and ideals, stories and fables that provide rich subject matter for family discussion. The culture of the Sabbath table will in large measure determine the measure in which Judaism is imparted from generation to generation. Aryeh Ben David has rendered a magnificent service for Jews of all ages and all denominations in providing a veritable sourcebook for Sabbath table culture.–Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Chief Rabbi of Efrat, Chancellor, Ohr Torah Stone Colleges and Graduate Programs

The Shabbat table comes alive with food and drink; it is animated with song, it is elevated through Torah. Aryeh Ben David’s Around the Shabbat Table empowers each of us to raise our Shabbat meals to a special spiritual place. It is a gift for every Jewish family.–Richard M. Joel, present and international director, Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life
