Editorial Reviews

Review

Duff Hart-Davis hits the mark with engaging tales and comment. Once you start to read this interesting and absorbing book you will find it extremely hard to put it down. Among the Deer is excellent value for money and I would fully recommend it to anyone interested in the history and management of deer. Go on, treat yourself: you won’t regret it! –Scottish Gamekeepers Association

…the writer’s engaging style immediately grabs your attention as he recounts those little incidents which will make this book ring absolutely true to any experienced stalker. Running through its pages is a love and respect for deer as well as an unerring ability to describe the quirky and occasionally bizarre characters associated with them, from the eccentric estate owners and naive guests to the monosyllabic but extraordinarily canny and quick-witted professional stalkers who take them out on the hill… If you should be lucky enough to be going to the highlands to fish, stalk or shoot this autumn, then be sure to take this book with you, for it will be essential reading on those occasions when the water is too high or too low, or when you are nursing stiff muscles after a hard day on the hill. And if you’re not going, then read it anyway, for by doing so, you will find yourself transported right there. –Deer

…a thoughtful and informative account of the places closest to his heart, which combines historical research with his own – often self-deprecating – anecdotes and is imbued with his first class understanding and appreciation of the natural world… Overall his faultless prose and enquiring mind combine to create a eulogy to his time away from the confines of Fleet Street. –Scottish Field
