Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up-“Showering makes me sweaty, and eating makes me hungry. Seeing people makes me lonely.” This simple statement typifies the grave sense of reality experienced by many of the characters in this collection of 10 short stories. The “old haunts” include young love gone wrong, an unexpected pregnancy, exploration of sexuality, father/son relationships, an evil twin, and a visitation from a dead cousin. Yes, the themes are familiar, but Lynch, not unsurprisingly, puts a fresh twist on them. Some of the selections are almost scary in their intensity; the tales are often disturbing-the author gets inside the characters’ heads and takes readers along. The teen protagonists are very real, and though their voices have a ring of similarity, they work to unite the collection. In each story, readers are left to decide what has happened in the past, what happens next, where the character goes from there, what has changed. Some of the selections are on the abstract side, and may leave inexperienced readers hanging. Teens who enjoy deftly crafted tales with more than a hint of the dark side will appreciate this sophisticated prose.
