After the Diagnosis: How Patients React and How to Help Them Cope

Dr. McClain helps patients deal with the emotional issues associated with a medical diagnosis-working with them to understand and cope with their emotions, to learn about their lifestyle and treatment options, to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, and to listen to their own inner voice as they make decisions about the future. Dr. McClain also works with caregivers in coping with their own emotional reactions and enhancing communications, and trains professionals working with newly diagnosed patients.

He writes a regular column on mental health issues for HIV Plus Magazine, and has contributed to publications that include Body Positive Magazine, Caring for Cancer, Arthritis Self-Management, Fibromyalgia News and Hep C Connection. He maintains a Website, www.JustGotDiagnosed.com, with information for patients, caregivers, and professionals, which was awarded the Standard of Excellence Award in the Healthcare category.
Michelle A. Buchman, MA, BSN, RN is the Medical Assisting Program Coordinator and an Assistant Professor at Cox College. Mrs. Buchman has been employed as a nursing director and nurse manager for behavioral health inpatient units. She earned her diploma in nursing from Burge School of Nursing and she obtained her Bachelors of Science degree in nursing from Southwest Missouri State University. She was awarded a Masters Degree in management and leadership from Webster University.
