Book Description
Civil society is a much used buzzword, both in media and politics and in the social sciences. The term refers to non-governmental organizations such as associations, associations, social movements, foundations, initiatives – in short, all the activities of citizens that help shape our today’s democracies. At the normative level, public conversation and values such as tolerance and nonviolence count to civil society. Frank Adloff first reconstructs the changeable history of the term, which began with Aristotle, spanning the Middle Ages to modern times and modern times, and includes thinkers such as Locke, Hegel, Tocqueville, Gramsci, Dewey, Arendt, Etzioni, Dahrendorf or Habermas. He then describes historical lines of development and examples of German civil society – as a social and public space of voluntary and political associations – from the 19th century to the present day. In the end, Adloff introduces cross-national forms of civil society and shows that these are essential in the age of globalisation.
