The Institutional Logics Perspective is one of the fastest growing new theoretical areas in organization studies (Thornton, Ocasio & Lounsbury, 2012). Building on early efforts by Friedland & Alford (1991) to “bring society back in” to the study of organizational dynamics, this new scholarly domain has revived institutional analysis by embracing a focus on the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of institutions. In part 1 of a two-volume set, international contributors present the latest research and thinking on the dynamics of actors and institutional logics and offer a theoretical framework for institutional logics. The book’s introduction overviews the roots of institutional logics scholarship. Section 1 explores meta-theoretical issues and perspectives, and section 2 highlights institutional logic processes with cases such as the Bank of North Dakota and prospects for reform in American banking, and the changing relationship between hospitalist identity and logic of health care.
