This volume focuses on the social functions of making, collecting, displaying and donating art, with particular attention to the sixteenthand seventeenth-century Netherlands. Gathered in honour of John Michael Montias (1928-2005), one of the foremost scholars of Vermeer and a pioneer in the study of the socioeconomic dimensions of art, these essays present a commentary on the values invested in art.

About the Author

Amy Golahny is the Richmond Professor of Art History at Lycoming College, and president of the international organization Historians of Netherlandish Art. Her publications include Rembrandt's Reading and many articles on Dutch art. Mia M. Mochizuki, a scholar of Northern Renaissance and Baroque art, retired from teaching after holding professorships at New York University Institute of Fine Arts and NYU Abu Dhabi, the Graduate Theological Union and Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and the University of Chicago. Her seven books include: the prize-winning Netherlandish Image after Iconoclasm (2008), Dawn of a Global Age (2017), The Nomadic Object (ed., 2018), and Jesuit Art (2022). Lisa Vergara is associate professor of art history at Hunter College and The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, New York, New York.
